bullet1 Brain Impairments to Children by drugs and Early Umbilical cord Clamping

Compromosing our Children's Abilities by Early Umbilical Cord Clamping and Drugging the Pregnant Women: Childhood Anemia, Autism, Brain Tumors, Cancers, CP, MS, Holes in the Heart, Heart Murmurs, Eating and Sleeping disorders and Behavior and Learning Disabilities. Joseph Chilton Pearce's book " The Magical Child" ?

    • On pages 48-50, Chapter, Time Bomb, Pearce cites research done by Dr. William B. Windle who noted from research "brain lesions" caused by medical interventions of the child's natural birth:
    • Windle...." was concerned about childbirth practices. specifically two questionable procedures: the widespread, automatic use of premedication and anesthetics and the usual practice of cutting the umbilical cord as soon as the baby's body was clear. There has never been a textbook on obstetrics that did NOT stress leaving the umbilical cord strictly alone so long as any activity is detectable in it.
    • A drugged mother immediately means a drugged infant, and a drugged infant cannot get his breath. artificial means must be used. breathing is then clumsy, slow, inefficient. the cutting of the umbilical cord at this time denied the infant the reserves of oxygen at the most critical pint in his life. a vicious double bind is imposed.
    • "Newell Kephart, director of the Achievement Center for Children at Purdue University, finds learning and behavior problems resulting from minor undetected brain injury in 15 - 20% of all children examined.
    • Goldberg and Schiffman estimate that 20-40% of our school population is handicapped by learning problems that may be related to "neurological impairments at birth.

"Windle closed his report, published in Scientific American in 1969  , with this comment:

  • "Our experiments have taught us that birth asphyxia lasting long enough to make resuscitation necessary always damages the brain..... a great many human infants have to be resuscitated at birth.

  • We assume that their brains, too, have been damaged. there is reason to believe that the number of human beings in the USA with minimal brain damage due to asphyxia at birth is much larger than has been thought  .

  • Perhaps it is time to reexamine current practices of childbirth with a view to avoiding conditions that give rise to asphyxia."

Brain Impaired on Drugs:

VANCOUVER - There's a new drug available for the treatment of ADHD, or attention deficit hyper activity disorder. Strattera is a non-stimulant that may revolutionize how the disorder is treated.

Children with ADHD are usually treated with Ritalin — a powerful stimulant that helps the brain control behaviour. This enables a child to concentrate on tasks they find difficult or boring, such as reading and writing.
INDEPTH: Ritalin on the Rise
More than 200,000 Canadian children take Ritalin, which has side effects.

Eleven-year-old Page Thorburn was taken off Ritalin after only two months. She had too much energy and had trouble sitting still.

_______________

"It became very difficult for her to sleep and do her homework. Her appetite was affected," says Wendy Thorburn, Page's mother. "We found…it worked very well at school (but) it was really difficult at home."
FROM Nov. 27, 2001: More low income children on path to Ritalin
Page started taking a new drug 10 months ago as part of a trial. It's called atomoxetine, sold under the brand name Strattera.
Page says she likes it better — she doesn't experience nausea and has a better appetite.
Atomoxetine failed trials as an anti-depressant but has found new life as treatment for ADHD. It will soon be sold in Canada.
"This medication is taken once a day but it provides improvement for the child, not just for a few hours that it's taken but around the clock," says Dr. Margaret Weiss, a child psychiatrist who has spent most of her career working with ADHD patients.
FROM Oct. 15, 2001: Ritalin getting into the wrong hands
Weiss is conducting trials for Eli Lilly, the drug's maker.

"This medication is not a controlled substance," says Weiss. "It doesn't have street value. There are many parents who may have concerns about their children taking stimulants who are going to be willing to accept treatment with this medication."

A 2001 report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal discovered Ritalin abuse was high among teens. Nearly 15 per cent of teenagers who are prescribed Ritalin or other stimulants have given away at least some of their pills.
Strattera has only been tested in 4,000 patients. It hasn't been tested against Ritalin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it last November and it has been available in the U.S. since January.

Mercury causes brain damage in children:

Soursos is alleging the makers of the vaccine, Merck Frosst Canada & Co. and Glaxosmithkline Inc., knew or ought to have known the "neurotoxic effects" of the mercury compound Thimerosal contained in the shots. Another, similar class-action suit was filed in B.C. Supreme Court for a Sooke mother whose boy got DPT (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus) shots that she alleges resulted in her son developing autistic symptoms.

Jacqueline Chamberlain says her son Aaron suffered neurological damage after he got two doses of the vaccine containing Thimerosal, made by Aventis Pasteur Ltd.

The claim is not that all kids that get Thimerosal get autism," said David Klein. "It's that certain kids have a higher susceptibility. Different people have different metabolisms."

The warning signs for parents to watch for include developmental delays, language problems, motor-skill problems and lack of concentration, said Klein. The DPT (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus) vaccine with Thimerosal was routine in Canada from 1980 to the mid-1990s.
The hepatitis-B vaccine with Thimerosal was routine in Greater Vancouver from 1998 to 2001 and elsewhere in B.C. from 2000 to 2001. A Thimerosal-free hep-B vaccine was introduced in 2001.

Autism Costly $100 Million - Ontario

"Program for Children with Autism

Autism is one of the most severe developmental disorders of childhood, occurring in at least 1 in 1000 children. Many people with autism have severe relationship and communication problems, in addition to motor, sensory and cognitive difficulties.

Until recently, only a small proportion of children with autism were expected to achieve independent functioning as adults. Most were expected to require life long health, education and social services.

Canada: GOVERNMENT MAKES LANDMARK INVESTMENT FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
MISSISSAUGA - The Ontario government is investing an additional $58.6 million for services for children with autism, bringing the total commitment to almost $  100 million by 2006/07  , Brenda Elliott, Ontario's Minister of Community, Family and Children's Services, announced today.
"Research tells us that Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) works best when provided to children at a young age," said Minister Elliott. "Ontario is a leader in autism services for children and we continue to demonstrate this by more than doubling our investment in this service for young children so that they can get the help they need."

Ontario government must help special-needs kids, parents argue

Last Updated Thu, 06 Feb 2003 21:02:17

TORONTO - A group of parents in Ontario say the government has an obligation to help take care of their severely disabled children.

Anne Larcade

Led by Anne Larcade, they were in court Thursday trying to launch a $500-million class-action suit.

A similar issue is before the courts in British Columbia, where parents of autistic children won a case compelling the government to provide a controversial treatment for autistic children that can cost up to  $60,000 per child, per year .

'We want services'

The Ontario parents said that the province has denied services that the children are legally entitled to.

Larcade's son, Alexandre, has a neurological disorder that makes it hard for him to speak and move. That puts a tremendous burden on the parents, who want the government to provide services like group homes for the kids and respite care so adults can take a break.
Give up custody, mom told
The care may be available, but sometimes the price – giving up custody of the child – is too high, parents said.

ANEMIA IS ONE DISORDER THAT MAY LEAD TO BRAIN IMPAIRMENTS, AND IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH EARLY CLAMPING:

    • "A number of for-profit companies encourage parents to bank their children's cord blood for their own autologous use or for the allogeneic use of a family member should the need arise.
    • There also is no evidence of the safety or effectiveness of autologous cord blood transplantation for the treatment of malignant neoplasms (Table 1). For these reasons, it is difficult to recommend that parents store their children's cord blood for future use .
    • The importance of larger numbers of stem cells to the success of engraftment could encourage the attendance at delivery by a physician or other health care personnel to attempt to harvest more cord blood.
    • It has been shown that the timing of umbilical cord clamping has an important effect on the neonatal blood volume and the subsequent hematologic status. If cord clamping is done too soon after birth, the infant may be deprived of a placental blood transfusion, resulting in lower blood volume and increased risk for anemia in later life.5 Yao AC, Lind J. Placental Transfusion: A Clinical and Physiological Study. Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas; 1982
    • Immediate cord clamping will, of course, increase the volume of placental blood for harvesting for cord blood banking . There may be a temptation to practice immediate cord clamping aggressively to increase the volume of cord blood that can be harvested for cord blood banking. This practice is unethical and should be discouraged.
    • Although cord blood is currently considered discarded human material, it should not be collected for potential transplantation without  the written informed permission of the parents. 6 Sugarman J, Kaalund V, Kodish E, et al. Ethical issues in umbilical cord blood banking. JAMA. 1997;278:938-943

WHO directing early clamping with a drug oxytocin:

The World Health Organization is aware of the dangers of Oxytocin, but the various countries, like Canada's and the State's Food and Drug authorities are failing to give similar concerns or to investigate the reasons alleged by WHO.

The "World Health Organization (WHO) states that early or relatively early clamping of the umbilical cord is mandatory after the administration of Oxytocin. With Umbicut ... Information from: MP1-577 Tyvek Rx 10.3.qxd
http://www.tyvek.com/na/medicalpack/english/pdf/rx_jan2002.pdf
"In the United States and the European Community, mothers routinely receive Oxytocin to shrink the uterus during delivery. If this drug isn't prevented from reaching the newborn through the umbilical cord, the baby's brain development can be adversely affected.
Consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that early or relatively early clamping of the umbilical cord is mandatory after the administration of Oxytocin.
tyvekinf@usa.dupont.com  for information and questions why they do not give W.H.O. specific medical references. They Dupont and W.H.O. have failed to mention one of the other reasons for directing immediate cord clamping after the use of oxytocin/pitocin is that there is fear the womb will shut down before the placenta is expelled, and then require an operation to remove the placenta. ???
