mumpsimus (mump se mes), n. an error obstinately clung to, regardless of right or reason.


hubris (hyu bris), n. insolent pride; arrogance.  Also, hybris  (hi bris)


hubristic (hyu bris tik), adj. arrogant:  It is hubristic to think that we have the ability to inflict a "pax Americana" on the world, or that we could make it stick . . . by threat of . . . military superiority (Bulletin of atomic Scientists).  


iatrogenic  (i at ro jen ik)  adj.  (of a symptom of disease) induced by a physician, as in physical conditions caused by worry over a physician's diagnosis: iatrogenic heart trouble. -- iatrogenically adv .


iceberg - 90 percent of the iceberg is hidden, concealed, only the tip of the iceberg is revealed.


pax vobiscum (paks vo bis kem), Latin, peace (be) with you. Yeah. Right!.


Pax Americana - peace imposed or enforced by American power: Mr. Steel's final advice to America . . . is that Pax Americana should model itself on Pax Britannica which although often "insufferably smug and hypocritical" reserved its power for situations it could hope to control and which were directly related to the national interest (Punch). [New Latin Pax Americana (literally) American peace].


Pax Britannica (paks bri tan eke), the peace imposed or enforced by British power, especially in the 1800's. (literally, British peace).


pax in bello (Latin. peace in war.


Pax Romana ( paks ro mane), a period of approximately 200 years (27 BC. -A.D. 180) which began with the reign of Augustus Caesar, during which there was comparative peace in the then known civilized world, a peace enforced by the might of Rome: The barbaric realities of 6th century Britain, with its . . . sheltered relics of the Pax Romana (Time). (literally) Roman peace.


Pax Sovietica (paks so ve et eke, sov e), peace imposed or enforced by Soviet power: in the opinion of many European experts, the Kremlin has a more ambitious objective; to alter the status quo by exchanging the Pax Americana for a Pax Sovietica (Newsweek). (literally) Soviet peace.
