Cord Clamping: Natural pulsation ceasing reduces ICU care by 70%

I have several pregnant patients right now that need to know this information about cord clamping found
in Dr. Northrup’s latest
newsletter. Please talk to your midwife and obstetrician about this before your delivery.
At birth the baby goes from a water environment to one where his or her lungs must expand and begin
the process of respiration.
While this changeover takes place the umbilical cord pulsates so the baby still has the old oxygenation
system in place.
Clamping the cord immediately forces the baby to switch over much faster and gives the baby a feeling
of panic, that there isn’t
enough air. Babies often cry as soon as the cord is clamped for this reason.
According to Dr. George Morley who has delivered thousands of babies over 40 years, waiting
three minutes after delivery
before clamping the cord saves lives and assists in the oxygenation of the newborn.
Up until 1950 this was common practice until it was felt that the baby could get under or over
perfused leading to jaundice.
According to Dr. Morley t
his premature clamping correlates to 100% interruption or elimination of placental transfusion
.
This can account for blood loss into the placenta, before the child has breathed and guarantees that
moderate to severe infant
respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) occurs in premature infants.
In healthy babes born vaginally the contraction of the uterus at birth stimulates this transfer of blood,
but if delivered by C-Section
this does not occur.
If the placenta is allowed to stop pulsating on its own, especially in premature babes and C-Section
births, there is a
70% reduction of admissions to the intensive care unit for treatment of IRDS.
